The Wisconsin DNR is hiring two LTE (Limited Term Employee) – Fisheries Biologists in Florence and Green Bay, WI.

Position Summary

 

These positions will assist on a wide and diverse range of activities that supports the fisheries management program in the Peshtigo Work Unit.  These positions will assist with planning and carry out fisheries survey work including monitoring and angler creel surveys.  These positions oversee the data handling and helps with report writing.  These tasks include summarizing data in Excel and Access databases as well as the statewide database. In addition, the applicant needs the ability to analyze fisheries data, create figures, tables, maps, and PowerPoint presentations.   The successful applicant will write and edit reports for the fisheries biologist as needed.  The positions will require some public outreach and coordination with volunteers.  Some travel to assist with other work unit duties will be required. 

 

The Green Bay LTE Fisheries Biologist position will focus on fisheries monitoring and management work associated with the lower Green Bay and Fox River Area of Concern.  This position is grant funded through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. 

 

The Florence LTE Fisheries Biologist position will focus on fisheries monitoring and management work on the Menominee River.  This position is grant funded through the Mitigation and Enhancement Fund.

 

45%

Assist with planning and carrying out general survey work and miscellaneous tasks assigned by office Fisheries Biologists and Technicians.  Survey work includes fyke net, electrofishing, angler creel, and other targeted evaluations based on protocols on area waters.

Coordinate and enter baseline data into Excel spreadsheets, Access databases, and FM Statewide Data Base. Assist with fish aging and analyses. Responsibilities include preparing spine and otolith structures for aging, assigning age estimates, and completing age analyses.

 

15%

Use excel or other statistical packages to manage and analyze fisheries data then summarize data and create figures, tables and maps and PowerPoint presentations.  Write draft reports and edit reports for the fisheries biologist.  Assist with environmental reviews for Chap. 30, natural waterbody, and other permits as needed.  Assist the biologist with the development of stocking quotas and entry into the fisheries statewide database.

Public outreach including attending meetings with fishing clubs, conservation groups, advisories committees.

Salary Information

 

These positions pay $20.65 per hour and are in pay schedule and range 15-04. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan. 

Job Details

 

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and will not automatically lead to permanent state employment or be entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees.

1) Residency: To be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

A Wisconsin resident is a person who:

a. Has established a residence, as defined in s. 6.10(1), in this state not less than 10 days earlier; 

b. Has resided in this state for not less than a total of one year out of the immediately preceding 5 years; 

c. Is eligible to register to vote in this state; or 

d. Is the spouse of a person meeting the requirements of par. (a), (b), or (c).” s.230.03(12), Wis. Stats.

Qualifications

 

In addition to the required qualifications below, the selected candidate must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria:

  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a minimum of two years licensed driving experience
  • Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years
  • Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year

 

Required

  • Abilities or knowledge relating to general fisheries management principles
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team
  • Ability and willingness to work a modified schedule; nights and weekends as needed
  • Basic computer abilities and experience entering and maintaining data in Microsoft Excel

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree or specific coursework relating to fisheries habitat
  • Advanced proficiencies with computers and computer software, especially relating to Microsoft Excel, Access databases, and Fisheries Management’s Statewide Data Base
  • Experience with the basic statistical analysis of fisheries data
  • Experience with fish aging and analyses
  • Experience performing fisheries surveys
  • Experience performing general equipment maintenance equipment maintenance
