Position Summary

 

This position is responsible for establishing department accounting policies, procedures and financial functions relating to payables and account reconciliation. The position is responsible for performing complex financial analyses in the statewide accounting system. The incumbent needs to have a general understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

This position will interpret and analyze financial data; reconcile agency accounts across numerous appropriations and funds; track and reconcile agency assets; and design, test, implement, and maintain automated and/or manual financial systems and processes. The position will also develop, update, and maintain accounting policies and procedures. The incumbent is responsible for the review of agency accounts payables, accounts receivable, reconciliation of agency balance sheet accounts, establishment and maintenance of agency financial journals, accounts, ledgers, and records within the state accounting system.

The position will also produce various specialized accounting reports, review exception reports, and complete correcting entries. Other areas of responsibility include developing and maintaining centralized functions for DVA donated funds to validate and ensure transactions are legal, authorized and financially correct. Responsibilities also include enforcing compliance with complex State and Federal statutes, rules, and regulations.

Salary Information

 

The starting salary for this position is between $31.00 - $37.00 an hour ($64,480 - $76,960 annually). Additional compensation may be given for candidates with an active CPA license. The Accountant – Journey classification is in pay schedule and range 07-03.

Salaries are dependent on candidate qualifications. Compensation for current State employees may vary and will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

This position is eligible to work remotely after an initial training period. Remote work is intended to be performed primarily in the State of Wisconsin. High speed internet access is a requirement of remote work. Remote work options are subject to change based on business needs.

Due to the nature of this position’s duties, candidates will be subject to a criminal background check prior to appointment.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of application. WDVA does not sponsor work or student visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.

A twelve-month probationary period will be required.

Qualifications

 

Minimally-qualified applicants will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or the equivalent training and experience (e.g., analysis of financial statements/reports, balance sheets, auditing, cost accounting, etc.); and
  • Experience utilizing an automated accounting system; and
  • Experience preparing financial reports; and
  • Account reconciliation experience.

Well-qualified candidates will also have:

  • Public sector accounting experience (e.g., utilizing the Wisconsin Accounting Manual, etc.); or
  • Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
