Then working as a Revenue Special Agent might be just the opportunity for you.

The Department of Revenue (DOR) is hiring multiple Revenue Special Investigator (RSI) (Revenue Special Agent) positions for the Division of Alcohol Beverages (DAB); Bureau of Enforcement.   

These law enforcement positions are responsible for conducting easy to average difficulty investigations of potential violations of Wisconsin laws; providing technical assistance to government officials, and the public; providing administrative and staff support to other areas within DOR, and providing liaison with local, state, and federal enforcement law agencies and prosecutors' offices. DAB Revenue Special Agents conduct investigations and enforcement of alcohol beverage and video gambling laws; and provide technical assistance to members of alcohol beverage and video gaming industries.

The register created from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies in the next six months within DOR in Appleton, Eau Claire, Madison or Milwaukee. Currently we have three vacancies that we are filling that will be headquartered in 1-Appleton; 2-Eau Claire; and 3-Madison or Milwaukee.

Special Requirements

1.Must be currently certified as a law enforcement officer by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB); or eligible for immediate recertification through the State of Wisconsin Department of Justice reciprocity.

2.Possession of a valid driver’s license and eligibility to use state vehicles.  See Fleet Driver and Management Policies and Procedures Manual

3.Ability to possess and carry firearms and other state issued equipment and maintain proficiency in their use per DOR policy and law enforcement standards.

4.Must be at least 21 years of age (e.g., alcohol beverages).  

5. Employees of the Division of Alcohol Beverages may not be employed by or have a substantial financial interest in the alcohol beverages industry or any business subject to the division’s jurisdiction, per Wis. Stat. § 125.025(1)(c).  

Physical Demands And Work Environment

1.Frequent travel with some overnight stays.

2.Ability to participate in criminal investigations in a field setting which may involve making an arrest, subduing a suspect, gaining forcible entry to and searching dwellings, conducting prolonged surveillance, and defending oneself against physical attack.

3.Ability to participate in investigative activities in hostile and stressful environments such as locations with high violent crime rates; remote and/or isolated locations in company of armed, violent, and unpredictable suspects; in automobiles at high rates of speed and requiring unsafe driving maneuvers; in unclean and germ-ridden conditions with individuals openly hostile to law enforcement representatives.

4.Possibility of exposure to unknown substances and chemicals used in the manufacture of drugs.

5.Ability to wear a concealed bulletproof vest, be armed with a handgun and handcuffs, and may be armed with a rifle.

Remote/Telework up to 60%. Note: During probation you will have the opportunity to gradually increase to 60% (i.e. working remotely three (3) days per week, and will report to your assigned headquarters location, two (2) days per week) within 9 months (of your 12-month probation) based on performance and workload needs.  These positions require extensive field work which may alter the telework schedule remote and in office days.

State Vehicle: Revenue Special Investigators are assigned a state vehicle are required to reside within Wisconsin and within a 40-mile radius of their work assignment or assigned state office building (e.g. Appleton (265 W Northland Ave), Eau Clarie (5005 US-53), Madison (2135 Rimrock Road); and Milwaukee (819 N 6th Street)) if not residing within their assigned counties. If living within their assigned counties, unit personnel are required to reside within a 65-mile radius of their work assignment.

So long as the residency requirement is met, a Revenue Special Investigator may bring their assigned vehicle to their residence and may begin their shifts from their residence.  Agents are generally able to complete a telecommuting agreement to work remotely from their home after they have completed their initial training phase. 

These positions are full-time, 40 hours per week. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 8 am - 4:30 pm. However, the assigned work dictates the positions’ schedule. There are many occurrences when the work requires hours outside of those previously mentioned. For example, an agent may need to visit a business that is only during evening hours. In those instances, agents are expected to complete that work and flex their hours within that week to accommodate the work.

Salary Information

 

The starting pay rate for this position is between $42.34 - $45.67 per hour ( $88.067 to $94,933 annually), or up to the appointment maximum at the time of the appointment, depending on experience and qualifications, plus excellent benefits.  Use this Total Rewards Calculator to see an estimate of the total value of our competitive benefits package! 

The classification of this position is Revenue Special Investigator, which is in Pay Schedule 07, Pay Range 03. Pay will be set in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan in effect at the time of hire. Starting pay for current state employees may vary based on applicable provisions in the Compensation Plan. 

Job Details

 

The hiring process for this position will include a background investigation, criminal history check, fingerprint checks, tax compliance checks, pre-employment medical examination, drug screen, and psychological exams. Candidates must pass each step in the hiring process to move forward to the next and prior to offer of hire.

I-9 Requirements: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of appointment. The Department of Revenue does not sponsor work or student visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. DOR participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information for all new employees to confirm authorization to work in the U.S.

Probationary Period: A 12-month probationary period will be required.

5.Public speaking experience on law enforcement topics

6.Experience providing regulatory oversight of the alcohol beverage industry related to one or more of the following:  premises inspections, audits, reviewing records and/or documents
