The Bureau of School Financial Services is seeking applicants for an Auditor (School Finance) position. The Bureau of School Financial Services and Bureau of Education Options support the distribution and oversight of state and federal funds provided to public school districts, private schools, and other local education agencies throughout Wisconsin. This work is collaborative, solution-oriented, and focused on supporting educational organizations through financial compliance, auditing, and reporting activities. Position Summary

 

This position has responsibility for developing, implementing, and determining adherence to accounting, financial reporting and auditing requirements for local education agencies (LEAs) which include school districts, Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESAs), and County Children with Disabilities Education Boards (CCDEBs).  This position also supports the Bureau of Education Option’s work related to developing, implementing, and determining adherence to accounting, financial reporting, and auditing requirements for private schools participating in the Special Needs Scholarship Program (SNSP). This position provides advanced and highly technical consultation and direction to practicing certified public accountants, department staff, and private schools participating in the SNSP, LEAs and other recipients of grant and aid programs.

Job Details

 

Remote Work: This position may work up to 90% remotely within the State of Wisconsin. Employees are expected to maintain secure, high-speed internet access while working remotely.  Remote work from neighboring states may be approved only in very rare and limited circumstances. Please note that remote work arrangements may be rescinded at any time based on business needs, and employees may occasionally be required to report to a Wisconsin work location on short notice.

Travel: This position requires occasional travel within the State of Wisconsin, approximately 3–4 times per year. Some trips may include overnight stays.

Headquarters: The position is headquartered at 201 W. Washington Ave. in Madison, WI, and employees are required to report there on their first day of employment. In addition, the employee may need to report to their headquarter location as operational needs require. Reimbursement for traveling to or from the employee’s headquarters is not provided (e.g., mileage, meals, parking, lodging, etc.).

Pre-hire requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted prior to an offer of hire. A tuberculosis screen will be required prior to start.

Legal authorization: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., without DPI sponsorship). The Department of Public Instruction does not sponsor visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.

Qualifications

 

A minimally qualified applicant must have all the below:
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or closely related field OR equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Experience applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), governmental auditing standards, and/or financial reporting requirements
  • Experience auditing, reviewing, analyzing, or interpreting financial statements, audits, or fiscal reports for governmental and/or not-for-profit organizations
  • Experience providing consultative or technical assistance services regarding accounting, auditing, financial reporting, or compliance requirements

Well-qualified applicants will also have:

  • Experience ensuring compliance with financial, audit, grant, or reporting requirements (e.g., internal controls, state reporting, grant compliance, or regulatory requirements)
  • Experience developing, preparing, and/or presenting training, workshops, or technical guidance to internal or external partners
  • Experience reviewing current and proposed laws, and regulations relative to changes that impact prescribed accounting requirements
  • K-12 educational auditing, accounting, or financial compliance experience
  • Experience determining compliance with laws, regulations, or reporting requirements for educational organizations or private schools
