We are currently looking to fill a First Shift Police Sergeant position. Officers assigned to this shift work Pitman 12-hour rotations (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM) and Monday through Friday rotations. The sergeant in this role will primarily work Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays off, with a schedule that flexes to meet the operational needs of the shift. This position serves in an on-call supervisory capacity on a rotating basis (approximately once every six weeks).

Located in downtown Madison, The Wisconsin State Capitol Police Department has statewide jurisdiction to serve the approximately 35,000 employees of the State of Wisconsin. The Capitol Police has two distinct bureaus: the Bureau of Patrol Operations and the Bureau of Specialized Services. Each bureau is led by a Police Lieutenant who reports directly to the Captain. Together, Capitol Police officers, detectives, and supporting staff provide safety, security, and police response at 61 state facilities between Madison and Milwaukee. Capitol Police also assists with major events including Dane County Farmer’s Market, Concerts on the Square, Taste of Madison, Art Fair on the Square, and many others.

This position serves as shift commander and is responsible for the supervision of Police Officers and all law enforcement activities that occur during their shift and during times when they are the Staff Duty Officer. The Police Sergeant conducts evaluations and implements disciplinary actions of verbal, written reprimands and recommends suspension or termination of employees for cause. This position arranges schedules, coordinates field operations, maintains liaison with local law enforcement agencies, courts, etc., and coordinates criminal investigations. This position is responsible to ensure compliance with statutes, adopted department rules, policies, and the attainment of department objectives by subordinate law enforcement officers.

Starting hourly rate for the Police Sergeant position (schedule/range 81-03) will be $46.59 per hour - $50.76 per hour depending on qualifications and experience, plus excellent benefits. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period is required.

Candidates must have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License with a good driving record. The selected candidate must successfully pass a drug screening, psychological evaluation, medical examination, vision screening, and fitness exam.

This position primarily works Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays off. The sergeant is expected to set their schedule to meet the operational needs of the Day Shift (7:00 AM – 3:00 PM). This position participates in an on-call supervisory rotation, serving as the on-call supervisor approximately once every six weeks.

Minimally qualified applicants will currently be certified as a law enforcement officer by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) OR be eligible for LESB certification at the time of application.

• Patrol operations (e.g., responding to calls for service, documenting incidents, enforcing laws and ordinances, etc.).
