The Department of Revenue Office of General Counsel offers these opportunities. This position headquartered in Madison, but is eligible to work remotely up to 60% as part of a hybrid schedule, following an initial training period.

Position Summary

 

Represent the Department of Revenue in tax cases before the Tax Appeals Commission and in cases before other administrative agencies and the courts, and in assessor decertification proceedings; provide legal advice and opinions on a variety of legal questions; and review proposed legislation and rules.

Salary Information

 

Salary for this Attorney position (schedule-range 09-75) is $74,880 to $120,640 annually ($36.00 to $58.00 hourly), depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits.  Use this Total Rewards Calculator to see an estimate of the total value of our competitive benefits package!  Current state employees pay will be based on the provisions in the Compensation Plan.  A twelve-month probationary period is required.

Job Details

 

The Department of Revenue will conduct criminal background, tax compliance checks and fingerprint checks on candidates prior to offer of hire. 

Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.  The Department of Revenue does not sponsor work or student visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.  DOR participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information for all new employees to confirm authorization to work in the U.S.

Qualifications

 

Minimum qualified candidates will have each of the following:

1. Graduated from an accredited law school. 

2. Possession of a license to practice law in the State of Wisconsin (WI); OR will be licensed to practice law in the state of WI prior to the appointment date, and describes this ability in the application materials (e.g., currently licensed to practice law in another state and have applied for license to practice in WI.). 

3. Tax or civil litigation education or experience. 

Well qualified candidates will have experience in one or more of the following (in addition to the minimum qualifications):

1. Tax and civil litigation 

2. Real estate law  

3. Corporate law
